This is a preview of a project I'm working on for my friend Sarah G. who has asked me to play around with some ideas for an art quilt for her new house. Here is a mini-version of what I'm thinking of doing.
Sarah loves these art quilts by Mimi Damrauer. And I love this quilt by Denise Schmidt. I think this little art quilt falls somewhere between the two and that makes me happy. I picked colors that remind me of Brown County, Indiana, a place we both love.
This mini-sample is only about 5x6 inches. I anticipate the final product will be more like 3x4 feet. And calling it a quilt may be a stretch. I don't plan to do any traditional piecing OR quilting on it thanks to the wonders of iron-on transfer fabric.
Oh, you creative women (and men?) out there, what do you think about the overall colors and irregular/regular shapes? Is there too much of the blue fabric? Leave a comment and have a hand in designing my first "art quilt".

I love these quilts! I'm trying to convince Rod to get me one of the Schmidt designs for my birthday but somehow I think the $4,000 price tag may be a slight obstacle.
This reminds me of the Gee's Bend quilts. Do you know them?
I think the colors are good. Maybe a little too much blue in the B/L to T/R diagonal, especially the T/R? Or maybe it's just the slight off-kilter shape of the overall piece.
I have a dream of making some quilts, but as of yet they remain just ideas. Maybe you'll inspire me. Your stenciled t-shirts got me excited--I can't wait to try some for myself.
I like it a lot! I like the blue...I'm a little more concerned about the "jelly beans."
JAM, It's so nice to see you here! and I value your opinion. I'm going to pin it all up on a bulletin board before I commit to fusing/sewing it together so I'll keep in mind the comment about the blues on the diagonal. Too bad you live in Kansas or we could make a quilt together :)
Nat, I guess we'll have to figure out how to make our own Denyse Schmidt quilts--did they teach you how to sew in med school?
Kris, it's corn, silly, not jelly beans and as each kernal is only about an 1/8th of an inch wide, I don't think it will be too obviously "corny".

Oh, and I LOVE what I know about the Gee's Bend quilts. I have a book about them on my Amazon wish list and will probably buy it for myself one of these days.
Deb, I love your stuff--very inspiring! Your current project reminds me of the Gee's Bend quilts. I have the Gees's Bend American Treasures stamps, and I resent every time I have to waste one to pay a bill. It's a dream of mine to create a quilt in a similar style. I found your site after trolling around my friends' blogs. Amazing, huh? By the way, this is Joyce from way back in the Clinton era. (School, that is.) Happy crafting.

I will confess to having bought 3 books of those stamps because I liked them so much better than all the other options.
